This guide is about what sort of rider should buy what RockShox fork. A Recon is a cut price Reba. A Sektor is cut price Revelation. A Yari is a cut price Pike. A budget-minded fork.

Steel stanchions heavier than the usual aluminium. Usually coil sprung as opposed to lighter air sprung forks. Available in short-to-mid length amounts of travel 80mm, mm or mm. Some models have mounts for rim brakes as well as disc brakes. A heavy duty fork. Overbuilt for abuse. Has a damping circuit biased towards big hits and landings.

Principally designed for dirt jump riding but can be a good choice for heavy-hitting riders. Long travel fork mm ish with a single crown. Designed for rough riding on bikes that are heavily biased towards performance on descents as opposed to climbs or contouring trails. With damping suited to aggro riding and repeated big hits.

RockShox Lyrik Ultimate RC2 2020 Review

Lighter than a triple-clamp DH fork. Longish travel forks mm, mm or mm. Designed for trail and enduro riding. Stiff and strong enough to be ridden aggressively on rough terrain but not too hefty. Sophisticated damping circuit with good adjustability for varied terrain. A very popular sort of fork for modern full suspension trail bikes.

Bolt-thru axle and QR versions. Not cheap but not expensive either. Lighter and with better damping than budget forks. Damping biased towards less-aggressive riding styles. The final tuning of your shock will depend a lot on the way the factory tuned your shock, your weight, bike type, suspension design or lever ratios, preferred riding terrain and riding style etc.

The cool thing is that during your trial and error you will learn a lot, have some fun and the satisfaction of getting the most from your own bike.

The L1, L2 means different low compression tunings, and is beyond the scope of this article, but the info exists out on the www. I highly recommend all of these contacts for their straight talking and client focused care.

You do this by moving the red dial full anticlockwise see photo. BUT be sure to count how many clicks it takes to put this dial to the minimum and record this number. You do these changes to let the shock move as freely as possible, so it can settle to give the most accurate sag measurement.

Put your riding gear on, camelbak etc then get onto the bike VERY gently have a friend help. This second sag reading will probably be more than the first sag reading — this is due to the stiction static friction in your suspension system. Often they say to match the shock psi to your own riding weight in pounds etc. There is a bit of a tolerance either side of this, but use their settings as a start point, then experiment from there.

When setting the air pressure with a pump, only screw the pump onto the shock until you JUST hear the valve open no need to crank it up too tight. When you screw the pump on, the gauge will register a slightly lower pressure than what you put in last time. The reason for this is that when you screwed the pump on this time, some of the air in the shock had to fill the hose on the pump.

This is why it is important to record all your settings when you do them you will get sick of me saying this. If you really want to get into tuning pressures you can also buy an adapter to play around with the IFP pressure.

Note that a couple of people have mentioned that their IFP was not correct from the factory and that correcting it solved problems with their bike handling.

So if things still seem very wrong even after basic tuning perhaps investigate the IFP. Your local bike shop can probably alter this setting for a small fee. Also SRAM have a chart here. The red dial controls the speed that the suspension extends back to normal after hitting a bump.

Rebound damping reduces the pogo effect of the suspension bouncing back too quickly after compressing from a bump. If you have just set the sag, you should already have your rebound on minimum. If not, put it to minimum or fast full anticlockwise. Remember to count the number of clicks to the minimum setting — and note that number down. Also check again that the blue lever is still on the minimum gate setting more on this later. Bounce up and down big bunny hops etc and note how the rear wheel leaves the ground — like a pogo stick.

Your aim is to only just stop the wheel leaving the ground after a big compression of the rear suspension. This is a good base line.

You still want the suspension to extend swiftly enough to recover after bumps you encounter on your normal riding terrain. The purpose of the clinic wasn't to venture fully down the rabbit hole of suspension tuning, but to focus on the bigger picture, on the type of adjustments that are slightly more involved than turning a knob or flipping a lever, but still easily doable by anyone who can tell their left from right and turn a wrench.

Adjusting the air chamber volume on either the Pike or Monarch DebonAir is a relatively simple procedure, but it can have a large influence on the way the suspension performs. In order to suss out the difference that altering the spacer configuration makes, we used the lift-served playground of Whistler Bike Park as our testing facility, repeating the same lap over and over again and changing settings between each run.

For my first lap, the fork a mm Pike was set the same way that I would usually run it on my home trails in order to set a baseline, something to compare the following runs against.

Once the first of many runs down the mountain was complete, the one token that I normally have installed was removed in order to illustrate what one end of the range of settings felt like.

The number of tokens a fork can accept varies depending on the amount of travel as well as the wheel size, but typically the less travel, the more tokens, because the ramp up needs to occur more quickly on a 80 or mm fork than it would on something with or mm of travel.

Without any tokens installed, the fork felt more prone to diving, and it tended to get sucked into holes rather than staying in the middle portion of its travel.

At slower speeds things felt relatively normal, but on bigger hits on rougher terrain it was clear that more progression at the end of the stroke would be helpful. After establishing what a token-free configuration felt like, it was time to install as many tokens as possible, in this case a total of four.

The fork's bottomless tokens are located underneath the non-driveside topcap. With the fork dialed in, it was time to start working on the rear shock, a Monarch Plus DebonAir. Once the air is removed from the shock, removing the rubber o-ring at the base of the outer air sleeve allows the sleeve to be slid off, and for the rubber band volume spacers to be added or removed.

Unlike the fork, where one token makes a noticeable difference, it usually takes two or three rubber bands to make a difference in the shock's feel, as the above graphic illustrates. Just like with the fork, after taking a run to set a baseline, it was time to install the maximum number of spacers, in this case a total of six.

This caused the shock to feel like it was bouncing off obstacles, and it felt too firm in the rougher portions of the trail. On the smoother, jump filled section of the run the extra support was a benefit, providing a platform to push against and really pop off the lip of a jump.

Dropping down to three spacers in the shock ended up being the magic number, a setup that allowed the shock to track and grip well over roots and rocks, but with enough ramp up to keep from blowing through its travel. Of course, the number of bands required will depend on the bike's suspension design in addition to rider preference, since some designs are already inherently progressive and won't need as much progressiveness as a a bike with a more linear spring rate.

The red rubber bands under the air sleeve allow the amount of ramp up to easily be altered. This was on Vital about 5 days ago, just sayin!

rockshox tuning recommendation

I use the Rock Shox app and the gauge printed on the side of the fork leg as a starting point for air pressure- my silly question is if the fork came with 2 tokens installed from the factory I assume the air pressure should be reduced accordingly. For every token I was assuming a 5 psi reduction. Sag is sag, the tokens just ramp up the spring rate as you get far into the travel. What year and model pike? What travel and bike is it on?

Also, the pressures on that sticker are just a starting point. Useful to an extent, but not a replacement for properly setting sag. There can also be a variance between gauges, so set your sag with the gauge you plan on using all the time. Not your shop's, not your buddy's, but yours. If it dont match what that sticker says, dont sweat it.

I used to have a Reba dual air on my 29'er, and could never get it as compliant as I wanted at the recomended pressure either. It dont matter really, if you go by the pressure or the sag, just so long as you have a reasonable starting point to reference.
